Samsung Electronics announced on Thursday that it has developed the world's first 8 Gb OneNAND memory chip for smartphones and will start production this month.
The new chip incorporates single-level cell NAND flash memory, buffer memory, and a controller in one chip.
It is four times faster than normal NAND flash memory and has the largest storage capacity in its class, making it suitable for data-heavy smartphones.
Based on the 30-nanometer process, the chip raises productivity by 40 percent over 40-nanometer chips, giving it a competitive edge in terms of price.
The world's largest memory chipmaker also plans to produce multi-chip packages (MCPs) with OneNAND and DRAM chips for smartphones as well as MCPs with two OneNAND chips in the second half of this year.
