The Remote Desktop Connection utility built into Windows XP is a useful way of accessing other computers on a home network to fix problems. The interface may look basic but there are some useful options that make it much easier to use, especially from a laptop.

Click on the Start button, All Programs, Accessories, and then Remote Desktop Connection. Rather than clicking on Connect, click on the Options button to see more.

The Remote Access window does not have to be the same size as the normal desktop on that computer, otherwise the window may not fit and you have to scroll around to see everything.

Performance problems can be solved by clicking on the Experience tab and removing ticks from some of the options.
