Stars share Prince of Persia experiences

Gemma Arterton and Jake Gyllenhaal in Prince of Persia
Tamina and Dastan spend much of the movie on the run

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is Disney's new epic adventure laced with family intrigue, lavish settings and plenty of swashbuckling.

Based on the enduring video game of the same name, the film version has steered clear of the latest trend for 3D, but is bristling with special effects.

The movie has a British director and several homegrown stars, but a bulging Hollywood budget to give it a family blockbuster feel.

Three of its principal actors - Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton and Sir Ben Kingsley - talk about their experiences on set and what the movie means to them.

Why mum's still the word for Hollywood's over-40s

Actress Kelly Preston is among a growing number of women who have children later in life. Picture: Getty Images

Several years ago,
Kelly Preston, wife of John Travolta (56) revealed she longed to have another child, admitting: "I thought I would get pregnant when Ella was about four. Then I wanted to work a little bit more, and all of a sudden she's seven."

This week, the actress's wish came true with news that the couple are expecting a baby, their third together, after Ella (10) and Jett (16) who tragically died 16 months ago. Preston's due date has not been announced but it's expected to be this autumn, shortly after her birthday in October -- when she'll turn 48.

The star's later-life pregnancy might raise a few eyebrows, but it's a phenomenon becoming increasingly common in Hollywood and the real world.

The Piano actress Holly Hunter (52) gave birth to twin boys in 2006 aged 47 and Desperate Housewives star Marcia Crosswas 44 when she delivered twin girls Savannah and Eden. Halle Berry and Nicole Kidman were both 41 when they had their first child, as was Salma Hayek when her daughter Valentina was born in 2007.

The actress spoke for women everywhere when she told Marie Claire magazine: "Motherhood is not for everyone. It is for me, but there's no reason women should feel rushed to have a child."

It's a philosophy that the average woman on the street seems to have bought into. In Ireland the average age for women giving birth for the first time is steadily rising, as is the number of women giving birth over 35. A decade ago, women over 35 accounted for 9pc of all first births, while now that figure stands at 14pc.

Fertility expert Sharon Murphy thinks this rise can be largely attributed to the cultural changes in the status of women. "Life has changed," she says.

"Most of our grandmothers would probably have been married by 18 and had children young but now women are more likely to marry late and have high-powered careers and jobs."

Sharon, a member of the Natural Network for reproductive health, trained under holistic reproductive specialist Zita West, and uses acupuncture to aid fertility.

Her treatment works hand in hand with IVF and she's seen increasing numbers of older women coming to her for help.

She says: "I have quite a mixed group of women who come to me but the majority would be over 35. Quite often they are women who work long hours, fly a lot, are very stressed and haven't realised how their own fertility works."

This observation is shared by parenting mentor Sheila O'Malley, who runs workshops and parenting website practicalparenting.ie. "I've definitely been aware of an increase in older parents in recent years," she says.

"There are more women coming in at the upper end of their 40s having 'change of life' babies."

But she doesn't believe age needs to be a prime factor in what makes a good parent.

She explains: "I think the old adage 'happy parent, happy child' is what matters and if you have a mum who is fulfilled and calm, then that matters more than what age she is."

She adds: "Older mums have a lot to offer that younger mums might not.

"After 40, I think most women have dealt with their own issues and are a lot calmer. They can bring a lot of mature life experience and often are in a more financially and emotionally secure place."

But despite the advantages of becoming a mum later in life, it's important to realise that pregnancy can become more difficult with age.

Courteney Cox (45) had a well-documented battle with fertility, suffering miscarriages and enduring cycles of IVF before giving birth to daughter Coco in 2004.

Sarah Jessica Parker (45) turned to a surrogate after admitting she'd made the decision after facing 'disappointment' when trying to expand her brood conventionally.

"It would be odd to have made this choice if I could have successful pregnancies since my son's birth," Parker told the chat-show host Billy Bush.

Sharon says it's important not to be too swayed by the ease at which Hollywood's older mums appear to 'have it all'. She says: "Whether they announce it or not, most of those women are not getting pregnant unaided.

"A 40-year-old woman has 40-year-old eggs and age is a massive factor in fertility. The success rate of IVF can increase dramatically with acupuncture but it's by no means a sure bet and women might need to look into other options such as donor eggs, to have a child."

Sheila agrees: "Being a mum is tough and there's no doubt that dealing with night feeds and lack of sleep is easier when you're younger.

"I also find a lot of women might not have the same support if they're having their first child late in life, as their peer group will already have been through it. And many mums who have left a busy corporate lifestyle to sit at home with a baby can find it quite difficult to adjust.

"That said, there are always going to be trials and tribulations for mums at any age. The most important thing is to get support and look after yourself. Attitude matters more than age."

Megan Fox in "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen"

Megan Fox says she wasn't dropped from "Transformers 3."

It was reported earlier Wednesday (May 19) that the actress, who starred in the first two installments of the "Transformers" franchise, wouldn't be cast in the third picture, set to shoot this summer. A rep for Paramount confirmed to MTV News that the studio didn't renew Fox's option.

Now, Fox is saying it was she who opted out.

"Megan Fox will not be starring in 'Transformers 3,' " reps for the actress, 24, told People magazine. "It was her decision not to return. She wishes the franchise the best."

Fox and Michael Bay famously exchanged heated words around the release of "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" last summer, with the actress comparing the director to Hitler and the director saying the actress "still has a lot of growing up to do."

Despite their contentious relationship, the pair seemed set to reunite this summer for a third "Transformers" flick. But Deadline.com broke the story earlier today that Paramount had declined to pick up Fox's contractual option for "Transformers 3" and that giving star Shia LaBeouf a "new love interest makes more sense for the story," according to an unnamed source.

Fox's next project, "Jonah Hex," will be released June 18; it's an action film also starring Josh Brolin, John Malkovich and Will Arnett.

"Transformers 3" is set to hit theaters July 201

Subhash Ghai reveals Mallika Sherawat knows marketing

Mumbai: At Cannes, if you are somebody or not, you are bound to meet a lot of new people with lots of energyand get a lot of invitations for their film screenings or their evening cocktail parties small or big.

(From L to R) Abhishek Bachchan, Subhash Ghai, Vrinda Rai and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

So my hand is full of invitations from students of various film schools from various countries to see their short films. I love the word ‘student’ and a person who introduces himself as a student of cinema. He is full of slurring confidence and great excitement looking at you with hope.

“Sir, please don’t miss this chance to see my film. You may never it see again!’’

We were at the section of ‘Short Film Corner’ at main Palais du festival. There was a very interesting short film Piano Man made by a British student. Then we moved on to greet our Indian fellows having exhibition stalls.

For the party for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s new movie, I dashed into Carlton hotel crossing through an attractive but violent hoarding of the film and met the actor with the same warmth and affection as we have shared since Taal. I also got a warm hug from Abhishek, though he was in a hurry for his red carpet walk.

At the Indian Pavilion, I met Mallika Sherawat and posed again for photographs for a battery of paparazzi. I admire Malika — she knows marketing to the core. She knows exactly when, with whom and how to be photographed.

Ajay Devgn caught smoking in public

/photo.cms?msid=5952511A tobacco watchdog organisation Wednesday asked the health authorities to fine Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn for smoking in public while on the sets of his film " Golmaal 3 " in Goa.

In a complaint to the state tobacco control cell and the union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, National Organisation for Tobacco Eradication (NOTE) general secretary Shekhar Salkar has said that Devgn, who was fined once for smoking in public in Chandigarh, deserved more stringent action as he was becoming a habitual offender of the 'no smoking in public' rule.

"This being the second violation by Ajay Devgn, we feel that the punishment given to such type of habitual law breakers is too meagre. In view of this, we strongly feel that the penalty under section 4 of the COPTA (Control of Tobacco Products Act) law for both one who violates the law and one who allows violating the law should be increased," Salkar said.

Local newspaper flashed photographs of Devgn smoking on the sets of " Golmaal 3 " Tuesday with the film's director Rohit Shetty standing an arm's length away.

The general secretary of NOTE, which has in the past dragged Bollywood stars Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan to court for directly or indirectly promoting smoking, has also said that habitual violators of the COPTA law should be jailed.

"Fine for the first offence should be Rs.500, for the second it should be raised to Rs.5,000 and for the third offence an imprisonment for a period of 6 months, in addition to a fine of Rs.5,000 should be imposed," Salkar said.

Devgn is the third Bollywood actor to be caught smoking in Goa this month.

Earlier this month, actors Tusshar Kapoor and Arshad Warsi were hauled up by NOTE for smoking during a film shoot in Margao, 35 km from here.

Indian magic on the international red carpet

Tanushree Ghosh in Mumbai

Flmmaker Anurag Kashyap remembers the time when he had heard Vikramaditya Motwane's (inset) film script.

"I laughed at him and told him that no one except me would produce his film," says Kashyap. The prolific filmmaker, Kashyap -- whose films are often branded 'unconventional' -- worked with Motwane on Deepa Mehta's film Water.

Kashyap was the dialogue writer while Motwane was the choreographer. Later, when Kashyap was shooting for his film Paanch, he opted for Motwane.

Says Kashyap, "I'd loved the way Vikramaditya had shot the Aankhon ki gustakhiyan song in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, and opted for him in my film."

While Kashyap saw potential in Motwane's script, film production company UTV Motion Pictures backed it too. A film about a teenager who returns from his boarding school to Jamshedpur, his hometown, after a hiatus of eight years, Udaan looks at the relationship of this boy with his father. In Motwane's own words, it's about teenage angst and the anguish of a boy who is growing up in an emotional vacuum.

And while Motwane admits that "my biggest challenge has been raising money for this film", Udaan has been grabbing headlines because of its official selection for the ongoing Cannes Film Festival.

"I'm excited and nervous," says Motwane. Udaan, for the record, has been featured in the 'Un Certain Regard' category after 16 years and is the first Hindi film to be officially selected in this category. The first film screened in the same category was Swaham (1994), a Malayalam film.

"The film is for an Indian audience and while we're awaiting its release in India, getting global recognition through film fests is an icing on the cake," adds Motwane.

Technology will change the way people watch movies: Shammi Kapoor

Mumbai: The day is not far when people, aided by technology, will be able to watch new movies directly at home and avoid visiting a theatre, yesteryear's Bollywood star Shammi Kapoor has said.

The 78-year-old netizen-actor is the founder and chairman of Internet Users Community of India (IUCI) and has played a major role in setting up Internet organisations like Ethical Hackers Association."With technology evolving rapidly, I feel two generations down the line people can see movies directly at home. They can plug into any movie by way of putting some coins over phone, download it and then watch it," Kapoor, one of the leading Internet users in B-town, told PTI here.

The veteran actor, who maintains a website dedicated to the 'Kapoor family', said, it feels great to watch 3D films like Avatar. "It is an excellent movie, the way technology has been used, its mind blowing...superb... excellent."

Sharing his experience with Internet, Kapoor said, "Even before Internet came to India I had made use of it. I knew about e-mails, online shopping and other things. We can see technology is useful in many ways - with just a click we can get so many things done in no time."

The legendary actor will be soon seen sharing special moments with fans through a video blog in a series of short 2-3 minute web episodes titled 'Shammi Kapoor Unplugged'.

SRK-Amitabh play hide n seek on Twitter?

/photo.cms?msid=5949670The Shehenshah of Bollywood, Amitabh Bachchan just made his foray into the Twitter land and in less than two days time has already gathered about 44,000 followers!

In no time the legendary actor is bound to make it in the list of the top Indian celebs to have maximum number of followers on Twitter for sure, along with the likes of King Khan – Shah Rukh and master blaster Sachin Tendulkar.

Fans of both Shah Rukh and Amitabh are although waiting for that iconic moment when the two will interact on Twitter and for the first time the aam junta could get to be a part of their conversation!

Where Amitabh chose to say a hello to his son Abhishek and Sachin Tendulkar the moment he entered Twitter, SRK is continuing to give his usual family and work updates on the site without much on Big B when the rest of the Bollywood is busy welcoming the senior actor. The two are yet to interact, not that Twitter is the only medium for them to but the alleged past rumours of a rift between the two is what is building up our curiosity.

SRK’s frequent tweets to Abhishek too are making us wonder what’s keeping the king from pinging the shehenshah and vice versa...

Shah Rukh’s close friend Karan Johar too has welcomed Big B and so has the entire Bollywood fraternity barring Salman Khan who is although comparatively newer to Twitter than SRK. Abhishek too has stayed away from following Salman on the site.

Shah Rukh Khan's 'knee'dling worries

Mumbai: Actor Shah Rukh Khan is apparently struggling very hard with his injuries while shooting for his next superhero movie. The actual list of his injuries is already huge and on top of that he has consistently aggravated every weak point of his body over the past few years by pushing the envelope.

Shah Rukh Khan

A source says, “His first injury was the hairline fracture on his knee cap that he sustained while shooting for Koyla in 1995-96. After that Shah Rukh tore a shoulder muscle while shooting for Dulha Mil Gaya for which his shoulder was strapped for more a month. Then it was his back injury, a slip disc, that he sustained while shooting Main Hoon Na in 2004 for which he had to undergo a minor surgery.”

Due to these injuries it’s becoming a difficult task for Shah Rukh to maintain his six-pack abs. His trainer Prashant Samant says, “I don’t think there’s anything that can stop Shah Rukh. When he wants to do something, he goes ahead and does it. I do have to take extreme care about the fact that he has a few injuries.”

Prashant relies more on cardio exercises for Shah Rukh rather than weights.

"When you are injured, you can’t lift weights. That might rule out a lot of exercises but it is still possible to maintain a six-pack,” the source says, adding SRK will go in for one more rehabilitation programme in the US soon. “He won’t go into quick-fix solutions anymore and he will be undergoing one more treatment programme in the US.”

Five killer apps for your docked iPad

Magic Window turns your iPad into, well, a magic window, allowing you to look out on over a dozen dazzling animated scenes.

(Credit: Jetson Creative LLC)

Does your iPad pull a lot of desk duty? Does it adorn your kitchen counter or even your nightstand? Do you routinely leave it on a dock or charger? If so, you should put that sucker to good use--even when you're not using it. After all, a big, beautiful screen is a terrible thing to waste.

As you learned yesterday, the iPad already knows how to function as a photo frame--and a damn fine one at that. But not everyone wants to look at photos all day. Maybe you'd prefer stock updates? Tweets? How about fish? Here are five apps to keep a docked iPad interesting:

Bloomberg: Want to keep tabs on the stock market? It's hard to imagine a lovelier window on Wall Street than Bloomberg for iPad. It delivers news, equity indices, a personalized stock portfolio, currency exchange rates, and plenty more, all wrapped in a gorgeous interface--and updated at regular intervals. Best of all, it's a freebie!

Tweets have never looked bigger or better than on Chirp Frame.

(Credit: Alexandru Bejan)
Chirp Frame
: Twitter addicts, this one's for you. The app serves up tweets as they arrive, effectively turning your iPad into a big, beautiful Twitter frame. You can choose from one of three slick backgrounds, swiping as desired to read earlier tweets. Of course, when you're feeling the need to send out your own status update, all it takes is a tap of the screen to tweet (or reply). Chirp Frame costs 99 cents.

iQuarium HD: Real fish are kind of a pain, don't you think? You have to feed them, clean the tank, yell at people to stop tapping the glass, and all that. iQuarium provides all the joys of fish-tank ownership with none of the hassles (or expense--it's a mere $1.99). Actually, the app is as much a Tamagotchi-style game as it is a virtual fish tank, as you have to feed your fish daily--eventually earning "fish points" to decorate your tank with accessories, backgrounds, more fish, etc. If you want more instant gratification, check out Marine Aquarium (also $1.99).

Magic Window--Living Pictures: An absolutely dazzling alternative to family photos, Magic Window serves up 15 gorgeous animated nature scenes--everything from sunrises to mountain valleys to tropical oceans at dusk. Actually, they're time-lapse photos, but they look animated, especially if you adjust the time slider so the action moves slowly. Magic Window is by far one of my favorite apps for a docked iPad. It's currently on sale for $3.99 (normally $4.99).

My Frame: Like the iPad's own Picture Frame on steroids, My Frame lets you view photo slideshows--but with your choice of information overlaid on top of them. You can add a clock, a weather forecast, a Twitter feed, birthday/anniversary reminders, sticky notes, and even iPod controls. Not bad for a $1.99 app.

Have you found any other interesting apps to run on your iPad while it's docked or charging? If so, tell us about them in the comments!
